WhatsApp Develops Birthday Reminder Feature: Report
WhatsApp is developing a birthday reminder feature that could allow users to receive notifications when saved contacts celebrate their birthdays, according to a report by feature tracker WABetaInfo. The functionality has been identified in WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.26.27.3 and remains under development, with no public testing underway. The feature is expected to send in-app alerts when one of a user's saved contacts has a birthday, allowing users to open the chat directly and send birthday wishes without leaving the application.
According to the report, WhatsApp is also working on a dedicated 'Birthdays' section that would display upcoming birthdays of saved contacts, enabling users to track important dates from within the app instead of relying on external calendar services.
Privacy And Rollout
The report said the feature will function only if WhatsApp has access to a contact's date of birth. In certain states in the United States, the platform already collects users' birth dates to comply with regulatory age-verification requirements. That information could be used to power birthday reminders in those regions.
In countries where WhatsApp does not collect birth-date information automatically, the feature may have limited functionality unless users voluntarily share their birthday details in future.
Privacy controls for the feature are yet to be introduced. According to the report, users currently cannot choose who can view their birthday information or hide it from contacts. Such settings are expected to be added before the feature is rolled out more widely.
Meta has not confirmed the development or provided a timeline for its release. As with other features discovered in beta versions, it remains unclear when the birthday reminder feature will become available on the stable Android version of WhatsApp or whether it will also be introduced on iOS.
