India, New Zealand Elevate Ties To Strategic Partnership, Sign 18 MoUs
India and New Zealand have elevated their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership, signing 18 outcomes spanning trade, defence, digital payments, education, science, agriculture and maritime cooperation during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's landmark visit to Auckland. The visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in four decades, marks a significant step in broadening India's engagement in the Indo-Pacific.A key highlight of the visit was the launch of the India–New Zealand Roadmap to 2030, which sets out an ambitious framework for cooperation over the next five years. The two countries also agreed to work towards integrating India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with New Zealand's fast payment system, a move expected to facilitate seamless cross-border digital transactions for businesses, tourists and the Indian diaspora.
Trade, Defence And Digital Connectivity Emerge As Pillars Of The New Partnership
The strategic partnership places strong emphasis on expanding bilateral trade and investment. India and New Zealand have set a target of significantly increasing two-way trade by 2030, building on the recently concluded Free Trade Agreement. Leaders from both countries said the agreement would create new opportunities across agriculture, food processing, clean energy, education and advanced manufacturing.
Digital cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions. The proposed linkage between India's UPI and New Zealand's domestic payment network is expected to simplify retail payments, lower transaction costs and support growing business and tourism flows. The initiative follows India's broader push to internationalise its digital public infrastructure through partnerships with multiple countries.
Defence and security cooperation received a major boost, with both sides agreeing to strengthen collaboration in maritime security, defence exchanges and strategic dialogue. The two countries also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific while enhancing cooperation on counter-terrorism, cybersecurity and regional stability.
Beyond strategic issues, the agreements cover education, research, innovation, space technology, renewable energy, agriculture and sports. The Roadmap to 2030 is designed to encourage greater collaboration between universities, businesses, research institutions and government agencies while promoting talent mobility and people-to-people exchanges.
Prime Minister Modi described the partnership as being rooted in shared democratic values, mutual trust and expanding economic interests. He said closer collaboration in emerging technologies, digital infrastructure and innovation would help unlock new avenues of growth for both economies. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said the upgraded partnership reflects the increasing strategic and commercial importance of India in New Zealand's foreign policy.
For India, the visit reinforces its strategy of strengthening partnerships across the Indo-Pacific while expanding the global footprint of initiatives such as UPI and Digital Public Infrastructure. For New Zealand, the agreements provide an opportunity to diversify trade relationships, attract investment and deepen cooperation with one of the world's fastest-growing major economies.
