Indian Navy Emerges As Strong Guardian Of India's Economic Interests, Says Rajna ...

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said recent global developments have highlighted the importance of a capable and responsive navy, asserting that maritime security is vital to safeguarding India's strategic and economic interests.
Addressing the commissioning ceremony of INS Mahendragiri in Visakhapatnam, Singh said the Indian Navy has evolved beyond its conventional military role to become a key protector of the country's maritime trade routes and economic interests.
Referring to Operation Urja Suraksha, Singh said the Navy safely escorted 18 merchant vessels carrying essential cargo worth more than Rs 9,000 crore after the conflict began in West Asia. He said the operation demonstrated the force's ability to secure maritime trade and ensure uninterrupted movement of critical supplies during periods of regional instability.
The Defence Minister said recent geopolitical developments have reinforced the need for a strong naval presence, adding that India's maritime capabilities are crucial to maintaining stability and protecting national interests in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
Security In The Indo-Pacific
Highlighting the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific, Singh said the region has emerged as a key focus of global attention and India has a significant role to play. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's MAHA SAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision, he said India remains committed to advancing security, stability and development across the region.
Singh said the Indian Navy has established itself as a trusted security partner through humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, anti-piracy operations, and the evacuation of Indian citizens as well as friendly foreign nationals from conflict-affected regions.
Indigenous Warships Strengthen Defence Ecosystem
On defence manufacturing, Singh said the construction of indigenous warships is strengthening India's technological capabilities and design expertise while creating a skilled workforce for future naval programmes. He added that warship construction also supports the growth of a wider industrial ecosystem linked to the maritime sector.
Referring to upcoming naval projects, Singh said the government is working to position India as a global hub for shipbuilding and maritime defence innovation. He expressed confidence that these efforts would further strengthen the country's position among the world's leading maritime nations.
