“Mirai,” starring Teja Sajja, is a super hit overall. However, it failed to become a pan-Indian success.
Teja Sajja had hoped that, like his previous film “HanuMan,” this one would perform strongly in the Hindi market — even if it didn’t do well in Tamil, Malayalam, or Kannada.
Since the Hindi market is crucial for pan-Indian films, he genuinely believed it would deliver good numbers.
For that reason, the film’s Hindi rights were given to Karan Johar for distribution on a commission basis.
But “Mirai barely” made an impact in Hindi. Its actual Hindi collection is under ₹15 crore, which is very low compared to its Rs 150 crore worldwide gross.
This underperformance is the main reason the production house agreed to an OTT release in under four weeks.
JioHotstar will begin streaming the film in September, just 28 days after its theatrical release.
