Food delivery platform Swiggy experienced a surge in orders across India on New Year’s Eve, with biryani emerging as the nation’s favourite dish as celebrations kicked off ahead of midnight. According to real-time posts on Swiggy’s official X account, more than 2.18 lakh biryanis had been ordered by approximately 19:30 IST, underlining strong consumer demand for the classic Indian celebratory meal.
Burgers were also in high demand, with over 90,000 orders recorded before 21:00 IST, signalling a robust preference for familiar fast-food options as part of year-end festivities. Alongside these mainstream favourites, Swiggy’s data showed that a variety of other dishes were popular among users: nearly 2,000 salads were ordered in Bengaluru, while over 9,000 customers opted for khichdi — a traditional comfort food — demonstrating diverse taste profiles across regions. Sweet appetites were also catered for, with close to 8,000 orders of gajar ka halwa placed as the last dessert of 2025.
Swiggy’s social media updates also highlighted broader consumption patterns beyond food choices. According to the platform, nearly 67 million users across India ordered meals for others throughout 2025, indicating an emerging trend of gifting food to friends and family.
The data from Swiggy’s New Year’s Eve order trends offers insights into Indian consumer behaviour during peak celebration periods, where traditional favourites like biryani sit alongside global fast-food staples. Market observers note that such demand spikes not only reflect established eating preferences but also the growing reliance on delivery platforms during festive occasions. |
