NTPC Renewable Energy has commenced commercial supply of 130.47 megawatts of solar power from its Khavda-I solar project in Gujarat, marking another step forward in India’s renewable energy expansion. The power supply began at midnight on January 29, 2026, under Phase II Tranche III of the Central Public Sector Undertaking solar programme. This capacity forms part of the larger 1,255 megawatt Khavda-I Solar PV Project, which is being developed in multiple stages to steadily add clean electricity to the national grid.
With this latest commissioning, the operational capacity of the NTPC Green Energy Group has increased further. Before the new unit was brought online, the group’s commercial renewable capacity stood at about 8,347.78 megawatts. The addition of 130.47 megawatts has now raised this figure to approximately 8,478.25 megawatts, strengthening NTPC’s position as one of the country’s largest renewable energy producers.
The Khavda project is located in Gujarat’s Kutch region, an area known for high solar radiation and suitable land availability, making it a key hub for utility-scale solar development. The phased commissioning strategy allows NTPC Renewable Energy to begin supplying power from completed sections while construction continues on remaining portions of the project, improving asset utilisation and supporting grid stability.
The new capacity is expected to contribute to India’s efforts to increase the share of non-fossil fuel energy in its overall power mix and reduce reliance on conventional sources. It also aligns with national targets for expanding solar generation and strengthening long-term energy security.
