The residents of Delhi woke up to very low visibility as a dense blanket of smog continued to cover Delhi and its adjoining areas on Monday morning. According to the India Meteorological Department, the visibility at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport is as low as 50 metres at around 7 am. 
IMD had warned of dense fog during the early morning and forenoon, with reduced visibility observed at the Safdarjung weather station. Temperatures in the national capital ranged from a high of 23°C to a low of 8°C.

Visuals from across the city showed a dense haze hanging in the air, making it difficult to see even a short distance ahead. People were using low-beam headlights and parking lights to drive on Delhi roads this morning. 


As visibility drops to near-zero in Delhi, news agency PTI shared a video from India Gate and Kartavya Path.

One individual said that sending students in dense fog, with near-zero visibility, is not discipline, but “endangerment”. 
“Sending students… in dense Delhi fog with near-zero visibility is not discipline, it’s endangerment. Attendance shouldn’t come before safety. Fog alerts exist for a reason,” the resident posted.

One person shared a photo showing high-rise buildings barely visible through the dense fog.

One individual shared a picture from Delhi Airport saying that one can’t even see a plane of they are 10 feet away from it.

Dense fog, low visibility

This comes after the India Meteorological Department said that moderate to dense fog has been reported in Delhi.

“Very dense to dense fog (visibility <50 m) prevailed at isolated pockets of Uttar Pradesh in the morning hours; dense fog (visibility 50-199 m): reported in isolated pockets of Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Northeast Madhya Pradesh; moderate to dense fog also prevailed over Delhi-NCR,” IMD said in its update yesterday. 
The visibility recorded at Delhi’s Safdarjung yesterday was 200 m.
