Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday accused Congress MPs of entering the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chamber, verbally abusing him, and threatening the Prime Minister. To support his claim, he released a short video clip showing shouting and chaos inside the chamber.
Rijiju accuses Congress MPs of abusing speaker, releases video

While releasing the clip, Rijiju said, “This is the illegal video clip taken by a Congress MP when 20-25 Congress MPs entered the Chamber of Hon’ble Speaker, abused him and threatened Hon’ble Prime Minister. Our party believes in debate and discussion and never encourages MPs to threaten physically.” The brief clip lasts only a few seconds but shows the tense atmosphere inside the chamber.

Earlier, speaking to ANI, Rijiju told reporters that the Speaker, Om Birla, was “deeply hurt” by the incident and that he had personally spoken to him. According to the minister, the row began over a dispute about speaking permissions in the House. He claimed that after the Speaker issued a ruling, it was ignored.

Rijiju said, “As I said, the Speaker is very hurt. I have even spoken to the Speaker. They (Congress MPs) went to the Speaker’s chamber and abused him, said bad things. Then the Speaker gave a ruling, which was not followed. Rahul Gandhi then said he does not need anyone’s permission to speak and will speak as per his wish, without any rules… Unless permission is given by the Chair, members cannot speak in the House. Even the Prime Minister will speak only with the permission of the Chair. Everyone speaks only with permission.”
Senior Congress leaders present, MPs encouraged

Rijiju alleged that around 20-25 Congress MPs were involved in the incident and used inappropriate language inside the Speaker’s chamber. He also said that senior Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and KC Venugopal, were present and were encouraging the protesting MPs.

He added, “At least 20-25 Congress MPs entered the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chamber and abused him. I was also there. The Speaker is a very soft person; otherwise, strict actions would have been taken. Senior Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and KC Venugopal, were also present inside, and they were encouraging them to fight.”
No-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla

The development follows the Congress submitting a notice for a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday. According to Lok Sabha sources, the discussion on the motion is likely to take place on March 9, the first day of the second part of the Budget Session.
Sources said that shortcomings were found in the notice submitted by opposition MPs. The notice reportedly mentioned the events of February 2025 four times, which under the rules could have led to rejection. However, the Speaker has directed the Lok Sabha Secretariat to have the deficiencies in the notice rectified before proceeding. This comes amid ongoing tensions between the Centre and the opposition over parliamentary functioning.
