The Greece Super League, officially known as the Super League Greece, is the top professional football division in the Greek football league system. It was founded in 2006, replacing the Alpha Ethniki as the highest level of Greek football.
The league typically consists of 14 teams that compete in a double round-robin format, with each team playing every other team twice - once at home and once away. The season usually runs from August to May, with a winter break in December and January.
Some of the most successful clubs in Greece Super League history include Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, AEK Athens, and PAOK. Olympiacos has been particularly dominant, winning numerous championships since the league\“s inception.
The scoring system follows the standard international format with 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. Teams are ranked in the league table based on points, with goal difference and goals scored used as tie-breakers when necessary.
At the end of each season, the bottom teams are relegated to the Football League, while the top teams qualify for European competitions including the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. |
