In a major push to strengthen India’s artificial intelligence ecosystem, Gujarat Chief Minister “Bhupendra Patel” has granted in-principle approval for the establishment of the Indian AI Research Organisation. The initiative is designed to boost advanced research, innovation and application of AI technologies in priority sectors.

Public-Private Partnership Model

The Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO) will be set up through a public-private partnership involving the Gujarat government, the Central government and the “Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance”. Officials said the tripartite collaboration reflects a shared commitment to building a strong national AI capability aligned with the vision of “Narendra Modi”.

Structure, Location and Funding

IAIRO will be operationalised as a special purpose vehicle at GIFT City near Gandhinagar from January 1. It will be registered as a non-profit entity under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. An estimated outlay of around ₹300 crore has been earmarked for the first five years, with the State government, the Centre and the private partner each contributing 33.33 per cent. The IPA, as the anchor private partner, will contribute ₹25 crore in 2025–26.

Alignment with National and State AI Strategies

The project aligns with the objectives of the India AI Mission of the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the AI Action Plan of Gujarat’s Science and Technology Department. The State government has also constituted an AI task force to promote sustainable development and improve quality of life through AI-led interventions in healthcare, education and agriculture.
