Dubai Revives Summer Four Day Work Week For Government Workforce

Dubai has once again rolled out its seasonal flexible working initiative for government employees, allowing many public sector staff to benefit from a four day work week during the summer as part of the emirate's broader strategy to promote employee wellbeing and modern workplace practices.
The 'Our Flexible Summer' programme will be in effect from 29 June to 10 September, giving government entities the flexibility to adopt one of two approved work schedules. Under the first option, employees will work extended hours from Monday to Thursday and enjoy Fridays off. The second model shortens working hours during the week while retaining a half day on Friday. Individual departments may also permit remote working where operationally feasible.
The initiative builds on the success of similar programmes introduced over the past two years, which government assessments found had improved employee satisfaction, enhanced work life balance and maintained service efficiency. Rather than reducing productivity, officials said the programme demonstrated that greater workplace flexibility could support both organisational performance and employee engagement.
Commenting on the initiative, Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, Director General of the Dubai Government Human Resources Department, said the programme reflects the government's commitment to creating a future ready public sector that places equal emphasis on operational excellence and employee wellbeing.
The announcement has also renewed discussions around flexible work practices across the wider labour market. While the scheme currently applies only to Dubai's government workforce, HR professionals believe its continued implementation could further influence how organisations across the region approach work schedules, particularly during periods of extreme summer temperatures.
As employers worldwide continue experimenting with hybrid work, compressed work weeks and other flexible models, Dubai's latest move reinforces its position as one of the governments actively testing new approaches to balancing productivity with employee experience.
