Government Reviews WhatsApp Username Feature Over Impersonation Risks

The Centre is examining WhatsApp's proposed username feature amid concerns that it could be exploited for impersonation, fraud and other malicious activities, according to media report. They are evaluating the potential risks associated with the feature, the sources said, adding that the Meta-owned messaging platform's latest update has raised concerns within the government.
According to the sources, the feature could allow users to adopt usernames that closely resemble those of legitimate government agencies, businesses and other recognised entities, creating opportunities for impersonation and fraudulent activities. They added that such misuse could have broader implications for public safety and society.
"The government will not compromise on national security or public safety," the sources added.
Privacy-focused Rollout
WhatsApp recently introduced a username system that will allow users to communicate without sharing their mobile phone numbers. The company has opened early reservations for usernames ahead of the feature's wider rollout later this year.
"Starting this week, you can reserve a username to use later this year when we launch this feature," WhatsApp said in a blog post.
According to the messaging platform, the feature is designed to strengthen user privacy, particularly in group conversations and while interacting with new contacts, by removing the need to exchange phone numbers.
The development comes as digital platforms continue to expand privacy-focused features, prompting regulators to assess whether such changes could also create new avenues for online impersonation and fraud.
