Asset Homes brings Diaphragm Wall tech to Kerala capital

Asset Homes has deployed the Diaphragm Wall, or D-Wall technology for its premium project, Asset Vismayam, at a bustling site in Sasthamangalam, in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram.
Asset Homes has become one of the first builders in Kerala to bring this globally proven construction methodology to a highly congested urban project site, said Sunil Kumar V, Founder and Managing Director.
Serves dual purpose

D-Wall serves a dual purpose that conventional methods cannot easily match. It functions as an immediate shoring system to hold back earth during development and then becomes the permanent, heavy-duty retaining wall for completed basement, Kumar said. “Since the wall is fully built before excavation begins, the need for separate temporary shoring structures is eliminated, helping accelerate overall project timeline,” added Kumar, a qualified civil engineer.
Global gold standard

The technology was adopted to address one of the most critical challenges in modern urban construction: executing multi-level basements safely in dense city locations without affecting the structural safety of neighbouring properties. “Given the highly congested nature of our Sasthamangalam site, we chose the D-Wall system to provide the surrounding community with the highest assurance of safety before any deep excavation began. While the technology is still relatively new in Kerala, it is considered the gold standard in major global cities where space is limited and safety cannot be compromised,” Kumar explained.
Strong retaining wall

Asset Homes has constructed a continuous, high-strength concrete retaining wall in place of conventional circular piles. The wall was built in sequential segments, typically measuring five metres in length and 60 cm in thickness, with the depth calibrated to specific excavation requirements of the site.
During the initial trenching process, a specialised slurry mixture was introduced into the pit to prevent surrounding soil from collapsing inward. This helps ensure soil stability and prevent displacement or damage along boundary lines from the very first stage of construction.
Structural advantage

The system also offers significant structural advantages during heavy monsoon by creating a rigid and secure perimeter around the excavation area. This provides a safer working environment for labourers and supports greater precision, quality, and long-term stability in the foundation and basement construction.
Significant shift

Industry observers believe the adoption of D-Wall technology at Asset Vismayam signals a signficant shift in Kerala’s real estate and construction sector, especially as basement parking and multi-level underground facilities become increasingly important in fast-growing urban centres.
Arun Nadig, a structural consultant, said, as basement parking and multi-level underground facilities become more essential in the state’s expanding cities, it sets a new benchmark for what is possible and what should be expected in urban engineering across the state.
