Chandigarh has become the first Union Territory (UT) to achieve saturation of rooftop solar installations across all eligible government buildings and residential government houses, with a total installed solar generation capacity of 103 MW.
The UT added 9.20 MW of renewable energy capacity in 2021-22, 3.52 MW in 2022-23, 6.83 MW in 2023-24 and 13.33 MW in 2024-25, as per the figures shared by Shripad Yesso Naik, the Minister of State (MoS) for new and renewable energy and power.
The UT is now focusing on private households, where the rooftop solar penetration is still relatively low despite subsidies. Chandigarh achieved the milestone when it comes to the public sector installations in 2024 and has hit a natural pause, with zero new capacity added in 2025-26.
Data revealed that solar panels have been set up on all 6,366 eligible government office and residential buildings, accounting for 67 MW of the total installed capacity. The reports noted that these installations generate around 6,700 MWh of solar power every month. This has led to savings of around Rs 3.4 crore in the monthly electricity bill of the government.
The MoS also added that a total of 288.58 GW renewable energy capacity has been installed in the country as on 30 June 2026, which includes 162.15 GW solar power, 57.44 GW wind power, 5.18 GW small hydro power, 52.06 GW large hydro power and 11.75 GW bio power.
Growth In Solar Capacity
In a separate response in Lok Sabha, the Minister of New & Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said that India’s total installed solar capacity now stands at 162.15 GW as on 30 June 2026, which is about 57-fold expansion, when compared to 2.82 GW installed in 2013-14
He added that under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for high efficiency solar PV modules, letters of awards have been issued for setting up of around 48.3 GW of fully/partially integrated solar PV module manufacturing units, involving manufacturing of polysilicon, ingot-wafer, cell and module.
As on 31 June 2026, around 42 GW of solar PV modules, 11.5 GW of solar PV cells, and around 2 GW of ingot-wafer manufacturing capacity has been set up. As per the information provided by the selected manufacturers under PLI scheme for high efficiency solar PV modules, investments of around Rs 73,400 crore have been made under the scheme as on 30 June 2026.
