When Sangram Patil, a London-based British national of Indian origin, landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airportearly on Saturday morning with his wife, he did not expect trouble. Instead, the doctor and YouTuber was detained for more than 15 hours by immigration authorities. The reason was aLook Out Circular (LOC) issued against him in connection with a police case filed in Maharashtra.
According to the police, Sangram Patil was stopped by immigration officials because of the LOC linked to a First Information Report (FIR). “They were detained by immigration authorities on the basis of a Look Our Circular issued against him on the basis of the FIR,” a police officer told Hindustan Times. After spending over 15 hours at the airport, Patil was later released.

Why was a case filed against Sangram Patil?
The case against Patil comes from his activity on social media. He is known to be a strong critic of the BJP-led government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On December 18, 2025, an FIR was filed against him at the N M Joshi Marg Police Station.

The complaint was filed by Nikhil Bhamre, the social media coordinator of the Maharashtra unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The complaint alleged that one of Patil’s social media posts contained objectionable content and disinformation about the BJP and its leaders, including PM Modi. It also claimed that the post had objectionable content regarding a woman.
Who is Sangram Patil?
Patil is originally from Jalgaon in Maharashtra and is a consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthetics. He has been settled in England for several years. Apart from his medical career, Patil is also a popular YouTuber. His YouTube channel, Dr Sangram G Patil, has over 468,000 subscribers as of January 2026.
On the channel, he shares videos in Marathi and English on health, education, and current affairs. After being released, Patil said that his political views were no secret. “They have clubbed some posts and have named me as an accused. I will discuss this with my legal team and decide on a further course of action,” he said in the video.
Political reaction to the detention
Patil’s detention led to sharp reactions from Opposition parties. Leaders from the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party condemned the move.
NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar posted on X, “The arrest of Dr Sangram Patil, Maharashtra’s illustrious son renowned worldwide in the medical field, is an insult to the state’s honour, and the Chief Minister should immediately issue appropriate instructions to the police and order his release. This act of misusing power to throttle democracy simply because someone took a stand against it is unbecoming of Maharashtra. We publicly condemn the government’s action in this matter! The government must secure his immediate release; otherwise, we will have to go to that location tomorrow morning in support of Dr Sangram Patil.” |
