Civic body elections will be held across Maharashtra on Thursday (January 15) — with nearly 16,000 candidates in the fray across 29 municipal corporations. Voting will begin from 7:30 am in most places and conclude by 5:30 pm. The state government has already declared January 15 a public holiday for the poll-bound areas, making it mandatory for employers to grant a full holiday or at least a few hours break.
Representatives will be elected for 2,869 seats spread across 893 wards in various parts of the state — with 3.48 crore eligible voters deciding the fate of 15,931 candidates. The counting of votes will commence hours later on Friday morning.
All eligible individuals whose names appear in the voter roll can download their Voter Information Slips via the official EC website. The document is issued by the Election Commission of India, and helps voters locate their polling station. The slip also informs voters about the polling date and time.

How to download voter slip?

Voters can log onto the official Election Commission website and search for their names on the list before downloading the slip. Here are the steps to follow:

  • Log onto voters.eci.gov.in and click on ‘Search Your Name in Voter List’ option. You can also go to search.eci.gov.in to find the details.
  • Search by EPIC Number by typing in the unique code and selecting Maharashtra as the state. You can also search by personal details such as name, date of birth and district, or by entering your registered phone number and typing in the OTP you are sent via text message.
  • Press submit after filling in the details to view your personal info.
  • Click on the ‘View Details’ tab under the ‘Action’ column. This will direct you to your voter slip.
The slips contain electoral roll and polling booth details. It is however pertinent to note that VIS cannot be used as a standalone identification document for voting.

What documents can be used as alternatives?

Mumbai Municipal Commissioner and district election officer Bhushan Gagrani said on Tuesday that voters must establish their identity at the polling station by presenting a photo identity card.
Those without a voter ID may submit any one of the 12 notified documents, which include the passport, Aadhaar card, driving licence, PAN card, government-issued photo identity cards and bank or post office passbooks with photographs. Electors can also show the disability certificates with photos, MGNREGA job cards, pension-related photo documents, official identity cards issued to MPs and MLAs, freedom fighter identity cards, or photo health insurance cards issued by the Union Labour Ministry.
