Arunachal Pradesh is set to inaugurate its first commercial coal mine at the Namchik-Namphuk coal block on 6 October 2025. The launch will mark the state’s entry into commercial coal production and is expected to support local employment and economic activity.
Union Minister G Kishan Reddy will perform the Bhoomi Poojan, hand over the mining lease, flag off mining equipment, and participate in a tree plantation drive as part of the project’s environmental initiative.
The Namchik-Namphuk coal block has reserves of 1.5 crore tonne. Initially allocated in 2003, the project has reportedly faced delays and was revived in 2022 through a transparent auction process that allowed private sector participation. The mine is expected to generate revenue for the state and create local employment opportunities, the government said.
Officials have stated that mining operations will follow environmental guidelines, with measures to minimise ecological impact. The coal sector in India has been undertaking land reclamation initiatives and continues to promote sustainable practices.
The launch comes amid growing investment and infrastructure development in Arunachal Pradesh, including road and rail projects, airport expansions and energy connectivity initiatives, which are aimed at improving regional accessibility and supporting economic activity.
The Namchik-Namphuk coal block will be operated under standard safety, wage and welfare protocols for workers, including insurance coverage and accident benefits, said the government release. |
