A routine Saturday morning turned into a tragedy in Mumbai’ssuburban Mulund after a huge block of cement from an under-construction Metro pillar suddenly collapsed on the open road, crushing a Skoda car and an auto-rickshaw in the process.
The incident, which occurred near the Johnson & Johnson company on LBS Road, has claimed one life and left three others battling injuries.
What exactly happened?
At approximately 12:15 PM on February 14, a section of concrete from a significant height fell down on an auto rickshaw passing underneath. As per the official statement given by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) the accident has led to the loss of life of one individual whereas three others were injured.
The deceased has been identified as Ramdhan Yadav, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)said.
Other injured individuals have been identified as Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav (45), who is in a critical condition. Other injured individuals namely Mahendra Pratap Yadav (52), and Deepa Ruhiya (40),are now in stable condition.

All injured individuals were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)
Allegations of Negligence
Recently appointed Mayor for Mumbai, Ritu Tawde visited the site shortly after the accident and expressed serious concerns regarding safety protocols.
“I came to know that the parapet body was fitted here just yesterday. This is a huge negligence. Did they follow the safety norms? Traffic movement below should have been stopped for the time being,” the Mayor stated while addressing the media.

The Mayor’s comments highlight a potential lapse in coordination between the construction schedule and traffic management in the busy Mulund West area.
Emergency Response and Relief Operations
Following the incident, relevant rescue teams, and civic agencies were deployed to address the matter. MMRDA confirmed that rescue operations were initiated as quickly as possible to address the emergency.
The MMRDA stated on X (formerly Twitter) that their project team is present at the location to oversee relief operations and provide necessary assistance to the victims’ families.

“Metro project team is present at the site of the pillar collapse, carrying out the relief operations in close coordination with the BMC and disaster management authorities,” MMRDA said in its statement.
Impact on Traffic
The accident has caused significant congestion on LBS Road, a major transit link in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. Local police have cordoned off the area around the Mulund Fire Station to allow heavy machinery to clear the debris safely. Commuters are advised to seek alternate routes as the investigation continues.
