Essel Group Chairman and former Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Chandra on Wednesday announced plans to establish Nand Kishore Goenka University at an estimated cost of around Rs 100 crore in memory of his father, veteran industrialist and philanthropist Nand Kishore Goenka.
The announcement came after the last rites of Nand Kishore Goenka, who died in Mumbai on July 13 at the age of 96. Addressing those present at Goenka Udyan in Agroha Dham, Hisar, Chandra said he and his three brothers had jointly decided to establish the university.
According to Chandra, the proposed university will come up on a 32-acre site in Agroha and is expected to be built at an estimated cost of around Rs 100 crore.
Proposed University Vision
Subhash Chandra said the institution is being planned to create better opportunities for higher education and employment for young people. He added that it will also introduce courses focused on social service, community welfare and the spirit of giving back to society.
According to him, the objective is to encourage students to contribute to society alongside pursuing higher education, reflecting the values upheld by Nand Kishore Goenka.
Nand Kishore Goenka was among those associated with the development of Agroha Dham, a religious and cultural centre in Hisar dedicated to Maharaja Agrasen and Goddess Mahalakshmi. He was also associated with several religious and social organisations and supported initiatives in education, healthcare and social welfare.
Further details, including the project's timeline, academic programmes and regulatory approvals, are yet to be announced. Dr Subhash Chandra said the proposed university is intended to honour his father's legacy while creating opportunities for education, employment and community development.
