SVKM’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) has appointed Prof Sougata Ray as its Vice Chancellor, effective July 16, 2026.
Prof Ray brings more than three decades of experience across higher education, strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship and corporate governance.
Before joining NMIMS, he served as the Thomas Schmidheiny Chaired Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship Practice and Executive Director of the Thomas Schmidheiny Centre for Family Enterprise at the Indian School of Business.
He previously held several academic and leadership roles at IIM Calcutta, including Professor of Strategic Management, Dean and Member of its Board of Governors. Prof Ray has also served as General Manager, leading the Innovation Lab at Infosys Technologies.
“Prof Ray’s distinguished scholarship, proven leadership and deep commitment to institution-building make him exceptionally well-positioned to lead NMIMS into its next phase of growth, scale and academic excellence,” said Amrish R. Patel, Chancellor, NMIMS.
Commenting on his appointment, Prof Ray said it was a privilege to lead NMIMS at a time when higher education was being reimagined globally.
“I look forward to building on these strengths to foster innovation, interdisciplinary learning and meaningful societal impact, while preparing future-ready leaders equipped to navigate an AI-driven, inclusive world,” he said.
An alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad and the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, Prof Ray has authored nearly 200 research papers, articles, books and case studies. He has also contributed to institution-building initiatives at IIM Indore, IIM Calcutta and ISB.
Under his leadership, NMIMS intends to strengthen its focus on research, interdisciplinary learning, entrepreneurship, industry partnerships, global collaborations and AI-enabled education. |
