Hindalco Industries, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, has unveiled a USD 10 billion (around Rs 1 lakh crore) organic growth programme, marking the largest capital investment in the company's history.
The investment roadmap aims to expand Hindalco's production capacities, strengthen its portfolio of value-added and engineered products, deepen customer partnerships and enhance its contribution to the economies and communities where it operates.
Announcing the plan at the company's annual general meeting on Thursday, Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said the world is entering an era where high-performance materials, circularity and advanced manufacturing will redefine industries, positioning Hindalco to capitalise on these long-term trends.
"We are expanding our downstream portfolio of high-margin, non-LME-linked, value-added and engineered products across India and Novelis," Birla said.
Rs 50,000 Crore Already Committed, More Investments Under Evaluation
Birla said the company has already earmarked Rs 50,000 crore over the next three years for strategic growth projects across its value chain, while evaluating another Rs 50,000 crore worth of investment opportunities.
The expansion programme is expected to enhance Hindalco's capabilities across aluminium and copper businesses while increasing its focus on downstream products that offer stronger margins and reduced exposure to London Metal Exchange (LME) price fluctuations.
India's Aluminium And Copper Demand Set To Surge
Highlighting India's long-term growth prospects, Birla said domestic aluminium consumption, estimated at 6.1 million tonnes in FY26, is expected to increase nearly five-fold to 28 million tonnes by FY47, significantly boosting demand for critical raw materials.
He added that India aims to achieve complete domestic self-sufficiency in both bauxite and alumina by 2035.
Copper demand is also expected to witness robust growth, with domestic refined copper consumption projected to rise fourfold from 0.9 million tonnes in FY26 to 3.6 million tonnes by FY47, driven by renewable energy, electric mobility, high-speed rail and data centre investments.
Hindalco Shifts From Supplier To Product Development Partner
Birla said Hindalco has evolved beyond being a contract manufacturer to becoming a strategic engineering partner for customers.
Rather than simply manufacturing components based on customer specifications, the company now develops material specifications and product designs itself, supported by teams of process scientists, alloy specialists, modelling experts and design engineers.
The company is also expanding its prototyping and testing capabilities to accelerate the commercialisation of new products.
Auto Business Continues To Expand
Hindalco currently supplies a wide range of critical components to India's automotive industry, including battery enclosures, battery casings, crash management systems, front forks, structural components and other safety-critical applications used across two-, three- and four-wheeler segments.
During the year, the company also developed an industry-first in-house digital import trade platform that integrates Hindalco's enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems directly with its banking partners, streamlining import-related transactions and improving operational efficiency. |
