On the occasion of International E-waste Day, One World International School (OWIS), Whitefield, celebrated a notable achievement by its young changemakers, who won the Gold Trophy at the Global Excellence Day (GED) 2025, organised by the Global Schools Group (GSG) in Singapore.

The project by OWIS Whitefield students Lavanya Jain, Pranika Gupta, and Ruthvik Makam Chenna (all from PYP 5) addressed the urgent issue of e-waste management, a growing global concern. The competition featured participation from over 50 schools worldwide, with hundreds of students showcasing their innovative ideas. OWIS Whitefield’s project stood out for its creativity, community involvement, and strong alignment with the GED theme, ‘Kaizen: Continuous Improvement’.

Their project presented a practical and scalable system to manage electronic waste within schools and local communities. Through months of research, teamwork, and community engagement, the students successfully collected 137 kilograms of e-waste, creating a tangible impact even before presenting their idea on the global stage.

Taking their initiative a step further, the students launched a petition addressed to the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, which received acknowledgement from the Central Pollution Control Board. They also partnered with Zolopik, an authorised e-waste recycling organisation, turning their concept into a sustainable, real-world initiative that continues to make a positive environmental impact.

“This victory is a proud moment for OWIS Whitefield. Our students have shown that with creativity, resilience, and teamwork, young learners can drive real change for a sustainable future. Bringing home the Gold from Singapore reinforces our belief in nurturing changemakers,” said Shylaja Salwan, Principal, OWIS Whitefield.

Student representative Lavanya Jain, sharing her excitement, added, “Winning the Gold at GED 2025 has inspired us to believe that even small steps can lead to big change. Collecting e-waste, engaging with our community, and presenting our ideas globally has been an unforgettable experience. This is just the beginning of our journey towards sustainability.”
