A nationwide survey has found that the mandatory use of E20 petrol is significantly reducing fuel efficiency and increasing mechanical problems for older vehicles in India. The survey, conducted by community platform LocalCircles, indicates that 80 per cent of owners with petrol vehicles purchased in 2022 or earlier have seen a drop in mileage.
The government made E20 petrol, which contains 20 per cent ethanol, mandatory across the country in April 2025. The policy aims to reduce fossil fuel use and cut emissions. However, the survey of over 36,000 respondents suggests it is having a pronounced effect on vehicles not designed for the higher-ethanol blend.
Beyond lower mileage, the survey highlights a sharp increase in maintenance issues. It found that 52 per cent of owners of these older petrol vehicles are facing unusual wear and tear or repair needs in 2025, a figure that has nearly doubled since August. These issues are affecting key components such as engines, fuel tanks and carburettors. Mechanics across the country have reported a rise in fuel-related problems.
The survey results suggest that as older vehicles continue to use E20, their components may be degrading faster than anticipated. While the government has promoted E20 as a step towards cleaner energy, many vehicle owners feel the change has been costly.
Earlier findings from LocalCircles indicated that more than half of the respondents would support E20 fuel only if it was an optional, cheaper alternative to regular petrol. The government, however, has maintained that E20 is safe for all vehicles.
Globally, ethanol blending is a common strategy to lower emissions, with the United States and Brazil being the largest producers. More than 30 countries have similar blending mandates. |
