The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is one of India\“s most celebrated traditional sporting events, held annually in the picturesque backwaters of Alappuzha, Kerala. This year marks the 70th edition of this iconic competition, which showcases the rich cultural heritage and maritime traditions of Kerala.
Among the local products that gain prominence during this festival are coir products made from coconut fibers, including mats, ropes, and handicrafts. Kerala\“s aromatic spices such as black pepper, cardamom, and cinnamon are also highlighted, along with traditional handloom textiles like Kasavu sarees and Mundu. Additionally, local delicacies like appam, stew, and karimeen pollichathu （pearl spot fish） are popular among visitors.
The boat race features majestic snake boats called Chundan Vallams, each manned by over 100 rowers who paddle in perfect synchrony to the rhythm of traditional vanchipattu songs.
