Jeff Bezos has said advances in artificial intelligence prompted him to return to an active operational role years after stepping down as Amazon CEO, a couple of years ago. He sees AI transforming engineering and manufacturing in ways that made it difficult to remain away.
Speaking to the media, Bezos said he now spends most of his time leading AI startup Prometheus alongside co-CEO Vik Bajaj. He also serves as Amazon's executive chairman and oversees Blue Origin. Explaining his decision to take on an operational role again, Bezos said he "just couldn't sit on the sidelines" as artificial intelligence reshapes industries.
Focus On Prometheus
Bezos said Prometheus has become his primary professional commitment after initially backing the company as an investor before assuming an operational leadership role. The startup develops AI models designed to help engineers design, test, and manufacture physical products more efficiently. Prometheus distinguishes itself from companies focused on consumer-facing AI chatbots and assistants. It recently raised fresh capital at a reported valuation of around USD 41 billion, highlighting growing investor interest in industrial AI.
Industrial AI is emerging as one of the fastest-growing segments within the AI ecosystem, with companies deploying artificial intelligence across product design, engineering, simulation, manufacturing and supply chain optimisation. Unlike consumer-facing AI applications, industrial AI aims to improve productivity and accelerate product development across sectors such as aerospace, automotive and advanced manufacturing.
Amazon has also boosted its artificial intelligence strategy under CEO Andy Jassy. The company has expanded its AI infrastructure and developed its Nova family of foundation models. It has also strengthened Amazon Bedrock and invested billions of dollars in AI startup Anthropic. Bezos said he continues to support the company's long-term AI initiatives while focusing on Prometheus.
AI Beyond Automation
Bezos said artificial intelligence is more likely to augment human capabilities than replace them. He added that the technology will boost productivity by removing bottlenecks in engineering and product development. AI would also allow engineers to focus on innovation while accelerating the design and manufacturing of physical products.
Bezos' move also comes amid intensifying competition in artificial intelligence, with technology companies and startups racing to commercialise AI across both consumer and enterprise markets. While much of the industry's attention has centred on generative AI assistants, industrial AI is attracting investment as manufacturers and engineering firms look to automate complex design and production workflows.
