A total of 72 people were travelling in the public transport bus that collided with a tipper lorry on the Hyderabad-Bijapur highway in Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district in the early hours of Monday, authorities confirmed. As per the latest information, 21 people have died and seven have been identified. Most of the victims were women, some news reports said.

While some of the dead are at the Chevella Government Hospital, others have been shifted to Osmania Hospital for post-mortem. It has been decided to conduct all post-mortems at the same facility and more doctors will be asked to join the Osmania team.

While the drivers of both the vehicles involved in the horrific accident died, the conductor of the bus is among the survivors, Telugu media reports said. He reportedly said the lorry's excessive speed caused the tragedy. Duly loaded with metal, the overspeeding caused it to lose control and ram into their bus, TV9 Telugu reported the conductor as saying, adding his late colleague was not at fault. The passengers seated behind the conductor got lucky while those behind the driver were killed.
More than 14 people were buried under the gravel that was being transported by the lorry after the collision happened around 6:15 AM, reports said. A doctor at the government hospital in Chevella said the accident victims suffered fractures, facial, abdominal and leg injuries.
The authorities deployed heavy earth-moving equipment to clear the wreckage of the ill-fated bus. Chevella Inspector Sridhar sustained minor injuries during a rescue operation after an excavator ran over his leg, a police official said. |
