Security forces in Jammu and Kashmirwere placed on high alert on Sunday, January 12 evening after several suspected Pakistani drones were spotted near the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC) in the Samba, Rajouriand Poonchareas.
All the drones came from the Pakistan side, entered Indian territory for a few minutes, and then went back. After the sightings, security forces started ground searches in those areas ensuring no weapons or illegal items had been dropped on the Indian side, news agency PTI reported citing officials.
“A few Pakistan Army drones were sighted along the line of control in the Naushera-Rajouri sector of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army troops undertook counter-unmanned aerial systems measures, forcing them to return,” ANI reported quoting defence sources.

Why are multiple drones hovering over J&K?
The exact reason behind the sudden spike in drone sightings is not yet known. However, a probe has already been launched to find out whether these drones were attempting surveillance, dropping arms or testing security responses.
This surge comes at a time when Operation Sindoorwas launched in May 2025, adding to concerns about cross-border activity. Keep watching this space for further developments.
Army opens fire after drone movement in Nowshera
In the Nowshera sector of Rajouri district, Army personnel fired medium and light machine guns after noticing drone movement over Gania-Kalsian village around 6.35 pm, officials told PTI.
Around the same time, another drone was seen over Khabbar village in the Teryath area of Rajouri. The drone, which had a blinking light, came from the direction of Dharmsal village in Kalakote and moved towards Bharakh, officials added.
In Samba district, a drone-like object with a blinking light was spotted hovering for a few minutes over Chak Babral village in the Ramgarh sector around 7.15 pm, they said.

Another similar object was seen moving from the direction of Tain towards Topa in the Mankote sector of Poonch district around 6.25 pm.
Recent drone drop recovered in Samba
These fresh sightings come just days after security forces recovered an arms consignment that was allegedly dropped by a Pakistan-origin drone in Paloora village of Ghagwal, near the International Border in Samba district, on Friday night.
The recovered items included a made-in-China 9mm pistol with two magazines, a Glock 9mm pistol with one magazine, and a Chinese hand grenade marked SPL HGR 84. Police also found sixteen live 9mm rounds in the packet, according to an ANI report. |
