Bharatiya Janata Party MP Khagen Murmu, who was attacked by a mob during a visit to the flood-hit areas of West Bengal, is likely to undergo surgical intervention to treat the serious facial injuries.
The MP is still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Siliguri hospital.
"Murmu has sustained serious facial injuries, including a fractured bone below the eye. He is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU. We are evaluating his condition from time to time and found him to be stable," a senior official of the hospital told PTI news agency.
"The MP may undergo a surgical intervention to treat the injuries. Our doctors are diagnosing it”.
Along with Murmu, MLA Sankar Ghosh has also been injured in the attack. The duo were part of a team of BJP leaders who had gone to the disaster-hit Dooars region in northern Bengal to assess the situation and distribute relief.
The West Bengal Police are yet to make any arrest even after 24 hours since the attack, even as the BJP had filed a complaint against eight people at Nagrakata Police Station in Jalpaiguri district and staged a protest outside the police station.
“We have received a complaint. Based on that, an investigation has started. However, no one has been arrested so far,” an officer told IANS.
The incident has sparked a political blame game with the BJP slamming Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her “failure” to ensure security to an elected MP. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi targeted the state government over the “pathetic” law and order situation.
Modi's post on X, however, elicited a fiery response from the chief minister, who accused the PM of politicising a natural disaster.
