The Odisha government has extended the suspension of its internet services in Cuttack by another 24 hours, till 7pm on Tuesday, owing to the prevailing violent situation.  Back-to-back violent incidents were reported during the Durga idol immersion last week.
Extending the suspension of internet services, the Cuttack district administration expressed concern over the misuse of social media platforms for spreading provocative and inflammatory messages. The authorities warned the public against misusing platforms and said such activities could disturb public order and peace.

As many as 31 people suffered injuries in the first incident, including 10 police personnel. Fresh violence erupted on Sunday, when Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) cadres took out a rally defying orders. Eight police personnel suffered injuries in the violence on Sunday. However, government internet and intranet-based services are exempted. The notification warned of stern action against the violators.
Cuttack Police Commissioner S. Dev Datta Singh said the second clashes could have occurred due to the spread of rumours on social media about the health condition of one of the injured persons in the clash. The social media message was intended to spread hate among communities, he said. The commissioner added that a probe is underway to identify the wrongdoers.
