Lok Sabha standoff: 8 opposition MP’s suspended

The standoff between the government and the opposition in the Lok Sabha escalated sharply on Tuesday, culminating in the suspension of eight opposition MPs for the remainder of the Budget Session amid noisy scenes and repeated adjournments. The confrontation centred on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s speech during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address and his insistence on referring to the 2020 border tensions with China in eastern Ladakh.
The House witnessed disruptions from the morning, with proceedings adjourned twice before resuming at 3 pm. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, sought to continue his speech, stating that while he would not quote from any magazine article linked to former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane’s unpublished memoirs, he wished to briefly speak about Chinese actions during the Kailash Range standoff. The government maintained that he could not refer to unpublished material or articles based on it.

Uproar in the House, adjournments follow

TDP MP Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who was in the Chair at the time, asked Rahul Gandhi to proceed in line with the ruling already given by Speaker Om Birla. As Gandhi continued to press for making his remarks, the Chair called upon other members to speak. This triggered sloganeering by Congress and opposition MPs, which intensified when a TDP member began addressing the House. Amid the uproar, some members were seen throwing papers, forcing another adjournment.
When the Lok Sabha resumed, BJP member Dilip Saikia, who was in the Chair, named eight opposition MPs. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju then moved a motion seeking their suspension for the remainder of the session for “violating rules and throwing papers on the chair”. The motion was adopted amid continued protests.
