Delhi government will induct 2,800 air-conditioned low-floor electric buses under the first phase of the federal PM E-Drive scheme, with the new fleet expected to begin operations next year as the city steps up efforts to curb air pollution and expand public transport.
The buses will be deployed under Phase-I of the PM E-Drive programme, the Chief Minister's Office said on Sunday, adding that the initiative is aimed at reducing pollution while strengthening the capital's public transport network.
The government also plans to expand Delhi's overall public bus fleet to around 14,000 buses by 2028-29, as it seeks to improve connectivity and encourage greater use of public transport.
The announcement comes as the city continues to expand bus services across key commuter corridors. Earlier this month, the Delhi Transport Corporation introduced Route 753 Ext on an experimental basis to improve connectivity between central Delhi and residential areas in west Delhi, including Janakpuri, Vikaspuri, Uttam Nagar, Hari Nagar and adjoining localities. The route also provides direct access to major transit hubs such as Kashmere Gate, Mori Gate, Old Delhi Railway Station and New Delhi Railway Station.
Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said the expansion reflected the government's commitment to making public transport more accessible and commuter-friendly.
